Informal Interviews
Some managers will meet with job seekers on
an informal, nothing ventured - nothing gained
basis, simply to keep themselves aware of
locally available talent.
Though under-utilised, people with good
networking skills will often be able to
place themselves in situations where they
are effectively being interviewed - even though
the prospective employer might not even realise
it!

Let me explain.
Let's say you're at a trade show, just visiting like most
other people. The reason you are there is because your
company's competitors are there.
Most people move jobs to a direct competitor - it makes
sense, since that's where the experience is most likely to be
sought.
If there is a manager manning one of your competitor's
stalls, there's no harm in going over and introducing yourself
is there?
Along the way, make sure you let the person know that you
work for one of their competitors. Let them know what you do,
how long you've been there, how much you enjoy it.
If you think about it, you're the one in control in this
situation, so you can direct the interview (or should I say
discussion?) however you choose.
Ask about products, services, processes, staff levels
-anything that gets your target on side and talking about his /
her company.
Drop them a business card. Suggest getting together again -
anything really, since the ball is in your court.
You will be amazed at how many doors this approach can open
for you.
It doesn't have to be at trade shows either. Think of any
networking event and you will find opportunities.
Web sites, industry specific forums and places like
Twitter.com are ideal for those inclined to network.
